The Chicago Cubs added some catching depth ahead of Monday's matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Per the official league website, Chicago has signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year MLB contract. In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs designated fellow catcher Taylor Gushue for assignment.
Chirinos spent time with the New York Yankees earlier this year on a minor league agreement and had three home runs and six RBI in 13 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, he batted .162 with one home run and seven RBIs in stints with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets.
Gushue, meanwhile, went hitless in four at-bats with the Cubs.
The Cubs began Monday at an even 42-42 and in third place in the National League Central standings, 8.5 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
